Sophie Jacobson
TEACHER & FOREST SCHOOL LEADER
Spending time with children in nature has been my focus of my work for the past decade. I first trained in Forest School in 2008 while a teaching assistant then trained as an early years/key stage 1 teacher. I set up a nature play group on Hampstead Heath for home schooling families when my son was little, then went on to teach at some of the local outdoor Forest School nurseries and developed Forest School sessions of my own.
Wildwood Nature School is exactly the kind of school I dreamed of for my son, when he started primary school. Having witnessed the difference between children learning in a formal classroom or in a child-led outdoor environment, I have seen how it affects a child’s well-being, confidence and development. I passionately believe that children (and adults) find their true nature through nature and it supports us to develop this deep connection.
After my first career in Textile design, I developed community arts projects for the NHS to support mental health services and recovery, as well as a well-being project for girls. So I enjoy using a creative, holistic approach to support children’s natural creativity and intuition, to allow them to develop themselves fully and feel empowered.
I like walking and spend time outdoors all year round. Hampstead Heath is my sanctuary in London and I swim at the ponds. Healing, personal development and meditation are a big part of my life and I have trained in EFT, known as Tapping and other energy healing modalities. So it’s exciting to be involved in new school that is trauma informed and aims to support everyone’s well-being.
